ABOUT US

The Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) began in 1990 as the Medical Genetics Unit of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine which in 1999 became as one of the service and research oriented institutes of the National Institutes of Health-University of the Philippines Manila (NIH-UP). Since then all services of the Medical Genetics Unit were transferred to the Institute and is now the largest provider of genetic services in the country.

The UP-Manila Health and Safety Committee published the “Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Manual” for UP Manila and the Philippine General Hospital to facilitate better planning, implementation and evaluation of programs for disaster risk reduction and management by UP Manila Colleges and Units.

This seminar will focus on the guidelines given in the manual on how to identify emergencies and disasters that could affect the clinical laboratory, assess the emergency preparedness of the laboratory, and teach the participant on how to create and implement an emergency response program.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

    Discuss the minimum requirements for developing and implementing a Laboratory Emergency Preparedness and Emergency Response Plan.
    Discuss how to deal with blood and chemical spills and splashes in a laboratory setting.
    Discuss what to do in case of explosives related emergencies.
    Discuss what to do in case of natural disasters related emergencies
