Workshop Description:

As diagnostic technologies advance more closely to molecular approach of medical management and with a limited number of genetics specialists, it is a major challenge for health professionals to be prepared for the complex issues related to genomics in the clinical practice. Both in the hospital and community settings, nurses are expected to anticipate the needs of patients with genetic disorders however, they lack the knowledge and skills to attend to their needs.

In response to the institute’s vision to increase awareness and capability of health professionals in the provision of genetics services at all levels of the

health care delivery system, the Institute of Human Genetics, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippine Manila will be conducting a two-day workshop for nurse professionals to discuss basic genetic concepts, genetic origins of common disorders like cancer, high risk pregnancy, birth defects, and newborns screening disorders. The workshop aims to increase the awareness of Filipino nurses in applying the nursing process in rendering holistic care to patients with genetic disorders and provide information on available local genetics services, ethical considerations and roles of nurses in the field of genetics.
